| A new survey released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics has revealed that casino gambling including roulette gambling is increasing in popularity and more and more money is being spent on casino gambling every year. The figures released by the Bureau indicate that gambling accounts for more than 40% of the turnover in the nation's pubs and clubs. Money spent on casino gambling increased by 4.5% in the December quarter and by 5% in the previous quarter. The states in Australia have differing figures: Casino gambling accounts for only 1.8 % of total retail turnover in the Victoria state, while in New South Wales, casino gambling revenue sits on about 7% of the retail turnover figure. Queensland and South Australia both indicate figures of around 3% for gambling as part of the retail turnover. A spokesperson for a church-based anti casino gambling organization said that the country had far too many gambling venues and roulette machines. New South Wales has 90,000 poker gambling venues and Queensland has about 35,000. He claims that the 'pokies' are placed in the lower socio-economic areas and this increases the problems of despair and hopelessness. While there may be many groups against the increased trend in casino gambling, most of the commercial business organizations are applauding the increased option of revenue and commerce. If this trend continues to rise, casino gambling including roulette gambling will become an important factor in the Australian economy and some economic decisions will be made accordingly. | |
